Summer Vibes

Welcome or welcome back as I should say as it has been a while since I was last acquainted with my blog!  I guess sometimes no matter how gung-ho you are about a new venture (my blog in this case) and promise yourself you are going to keep the new routine going – some times life just gets in the way …………. and so I have been living – well working and living, doing the things I enjoy ….. and taking time to go on holiday:)

IMG_0457

Last month we had such a special holiday in the Scilly Isles.  For some years I had been thinking about booking a swim activity holiday but for reasons unknown even to myself had stalled on the idea,  but this year I just decided to go ahead and book it, because life is too short and I knew that I would live to regret it if I didn’t ever get around to challenging myself and hopefully having a great experience to remember.  I heard a saying recently ‘pure joy is on the other side of fear’ and this resonated with me – I hoped I would have this feeling once I had conquered riding with the waves – as I had not been sea swimming since I was a child.   I had also been hankering after visiting the Scilly Isles for some time – so why not combine the two!  This was all the reason I needed to up my swim training in the pool and by the time the holiday arrived I felt ready for the challenge with some trepidation.  The Scilly Isles sit to the south west of Cornwall and takes a 2 and a half hour ferry ride, or there is a small plane if you are not one for boats.  It is certainly not easy to get to and maybe that is what makes them so special.  It is like taking a trip back in time.  There are 140 islands altogether but only 5 are inhabited – with only the main island of St Mary’s having any kind of transport system.

IMG_2893

This is the path from our hotel to the beach – we swam back from the island you can see to the left of the photo

We stayed on the isle of St Martins in a luxury hotel perched right on the beach with a small group of like minded people and just had such a wonderful time swimming between islands, along bays, being driven by our own private speed boats to deserted islands for picnic lunch and then swimming to one of the other islands.  The water was cold but manageable in a wetsuit and was just so amazingly clear – we swam through seaweed and seagrasses which would normally freak me out a little but because we could see everything it just felt amazing.   On our last swim we headed out to the eastern isles to visit the seals and jumped into the water and bobbed along with them – just amazing!

Our guides were amazing hosts who stayed with us the whole time and organised for us to attend a comedy night on the island and also introduced us to the local jeweller on the island – just a small cottage that opens for a few hours a day – the jewellery is influenced by the surroundings and so there are charms of seashells, urchins, starfish, fishing boats etc.  However what caught my eye were the pebblestone charms (of course given the name of my blog!) Hubby bought me some of the earrings in advance for my birthday which I am not allowed to have yet!, but what really caught my eye was the ring.

IMG_3017

It was on display in silver – but all the rings I wear are gold – and so after great deliberation i decided to order one – and it has just arrived!!  I am so pleased with it – I will wear it all the time and will always be reminded of the special holiday we spent on the Isles of Scilly.

Whilst I was away I read a book – something I never normally have time for – a kind of self help book called Life Tonic by Jodie Shields who I have started following on Instagram.  It was such a pleasure to read – it is all about opening up to positivity and coming to terms with things that may have happened in your past and how Meditation can help you to restore more of an equlibium in your life.  I can’t say I have settled into a formal routine of meditation but I am definitely hoping to start practising on a regular basis and am feeling a positive happy chilled summer vibe.

How does this chilled summer vibe translate into my love of interiors?  Over the past few months I have been taking some inspiration from Instagram and have started following some vintage/bohemian sites.  I just love the way the style evolves over time and enjoys a mix of old and new with lots of comfy cosy places to rest and with lots of plants thrown into the mix the whole vibe just makes for relaxed times.  You may remember that some time back I began searching for a mid-century style bookcase for my new office space.  As yet I haven’t been able to find what I am looking for, but that is all part of the fun – the searching, the browsing in vintage and second hand shops.  I know I will get there eventually……….

Catch up time!

Welcome to my blog.  After my last promise of hoping to write more frequently I realise that several weeks have gone by again with not so much as a single post:(  Life has just gotten so hectic, as much as I have good intentions they just keep getting scuppered!  But I did want to write and let you know about my amazing holiday in Lake Garda before the memories fade too far into the distance!

After our holiday to Sorrento last year which was my first trip to Italy I just fell in love with the Country and it’s beautiful architecture, I had been wanting to visit for a long time and I wasn’t disappointed, so this year’s trip to Lake Garda was another location I was longing to explore.  We stayed in the south eastern side of the lake  in a town called Descenzano.

img_1802

The weather was mainly sunny, although we did experience a couple of amazing downpours which literally flooded the streets!

img_1834

During the course of the week we managed to fit in a day trip to Verona, a full day trip around the lake, mostly by coach, but including a boat trip around the north of the lake, a half day visit to a winery.  We also took a bus to Riva del Garda which is on the same side of the lake a little further north, I was interested as it was one of the places I was interested in staying.  Here we visited some amazing botanical gardens and a very interesting ‘Ritornale’ – a Portmerion style set of buildings and gardens which was a a real find.

Finally we took a boat over to the other side of the lake and then walked about 6 miles along the promenade through a couple of towns to reach Garda – and the boat back to our hotel.  One thing which was very noticeable was the amount of dogs out and about – during one evening I counted over 40 out and about for an evening stroll!

Luckily we did managed to have some chill out time too with swims in the hotel pool and eating out every night – although as a vegetarian this proved a bit tricky – with pasta and pizza being the only real options for me – and hence why I am now on a self imposed diet!

Almost as soon as we hit english soil it was time to collect our new puppy – meet Poppy our gorgeous new cocker spaniel puppy.

img_2161

She is a lovely soft bundle of fun and mischief and love, and a pleasure to have around, although those little sharp teeth of hers are to be avoided if possible!  If having a new puppy around the place was not enough to deal with, when I returned to work I started my new role which I am enjoying but there is a lot to learn and I am coming home exhausted:(  I had good intentions of catching up with this blog on Monday evening but ended up falling asleep in the armchair!  Oh dear, a sign of the times!  Hopefully things will settle down soon x

In other news – well there has not been time for much other news, but I am hopeful to start my redecoration of my ‘snug’ room soon – I have set myself a deadline of christmas – which is starting to loom large in front of us – I bought the paint before going away but life has been so hectic lately all I have had time for is putting some undercoat on the windowsill! So more on this front soon hopefully……..

I have also signed up for a free course which starts next week!  Crazy I know, with no spare time but I’m sure it will be very interesting – it is called the Power of Colour – and is an on-line course and will consist of teaching and inspirational videos, articles, quizzes, and discussions and assignments.  The course is run by Future Learn and I am hoping it will reignite my passion for this aspect of interior living/styling.  I am pleased to say that a couple of ladies at work have been asking me for help in choosing paint colours for their hallways and it is one of my favourite aspects of interior design so I am always open to learning more about the subject.

Through reading other interior/style blogs I have also signed up to receive tips for blogger newcomers about creating content and keeping the momentum going, so hopefully I can post more regularly again in the near future.

Until then…………

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn

Welcome

If you are anything like me, I’m sure you will agree that the last few weeks have passed by in a flash – it certainly feels like we have enjoyed a good summer this year, despite all that rain throughout June!  I feel guilty that I haven’t updated the blog in a while, but I found that what with working full time, and getting out and about during the weekends, I was getting very little time to write my blog….. and this began stressing me out, which is not supposed to be the idea, when I started the blog I wanted it to be a fun hobby……. and so I decided to put it on the back burner for a few weeks and enjoy my summer, and now as Autumn approaches hopefully I will get fired up with enthusiasm for it again:)

You may be wondering what has been taking up my blog writing time, so I just thought I would take a few sentences to let you know what I have been up to – and my plans for the coming months.  Well, there have been several trips out on our tandem bike, great rides on sunny days, through straw coloured fields with white fluffy clouds above, the breeze on my face and feeling like I don’t have a care in the world, just great!   A weekend in Norfolk visiting the National Trust’s Blinkling Estate and taking part in a 40 mile Tour de Broads bike ride.

Time catching up with old friends, visiting London to watch the Proms – a new experience for me – and also to visit the V&A museum for their ‘Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear’ exhibition.

I have to say that after some rather humid, sticky weeks in the office I am rather looking forward to Autumn – it is my favourite time of year – well, it is my birthday month after all!  I just love the warmer range of colours from ochres, through to forest greens and burgandys both in clothing and interiors – the touch of a scarf around the neck, the feel of faux fur and the comforting effect of pulling on your trusted old cardigan.  I love the smells of autumn with its woody, earthy scents. I still have a feeling like September is the beginning of a new term, full of new opportunities and possibilities.  For me this year it will mean a new job – an internal move but working within a legal property department – not exactly interiors – but that’s ok, as I find all things property endlessly fascinating:)Image result for next autumn interiors

Our other exciting news is that we are getting a puppy!  Last Christmas our beloved cocker IMG_1764spaniel, Lilly, passed away very suddenly and the whole family was distraught.  We needed some breathing space  to grieve and remember her; for us life without a dog is not complete, and we feel the time has now arrived for us to welcome another bundle of joy.  So Poppy will be joining us towards the end of the month after our holiday.   We now have a few weeks to make the house ‘puppy proof’ – I have a feeling my nice new kitchen chairs will have to be packed away for a while!

In other news I am making plans to decorate my ‘snug’ – this has been a while coming – I was hoping to start this straight after we decorated the kitchen, but time and cash constraints have meant it being postponed – but I am looking forward to sharing my plans with you over the coming weeks – a word of warning – I am going dark!

Finally, I have been inspired over the summer by the recent phenonenum here in the UK who is Joe Wicks or ‘The Body Coach’.  If you follow social media you won’t be able to miss him and he even has a TV show.  I am inspired by his healthy eating and HIIT exercise regimes and will start in earnest when I return from my holiday as I need to fit back into my jeans before the winter!

Well, that is a round-up of my summer, I hope to start writing more regularly once again so see you back here again soon:)

Another Mini-Break!

Welcome once again, I know my idea is for this blog to be mainly about my love of interiors but it is the time of the year to enjoy getting out and about and this weekend we had an away break booked in Winchester.  I had not been there before and as it is often touted as one of the best places to live in the UK I thought it would be a good idea to go and explore.

IMG_1622

Luckily we had the weather on our side for a change this summer and the weekend was warm and balmy.  We stayed in the Holiday Inn which was a rather swish 4* hotel.  Even when I am away for the weekend I have always got my eyes open for interior inspiration and these chairs in one of the foyers rather caught my eye:

The centre of Winchester is everything I had hoped it would be – small enough to be able to walk everywhere on foot with beautiful old buildings, open spaces and the river Itchen which runs through city and provides many beautiful views.

The cathedral was a must see and we were lucky enough to have a guided tour and heard about its colourful history –  the architecture was stunning.   I just love the romanticism of the beautiful arches

………. and the georgeous original 12th century mosaic tiled floor:

IMG_1636

Amongst other attractions we visited the city mill which is around 1000 years old and were able to see some milling taking place.

With all this sight-seeing we certainly built up an appetite and for Saturday’s evening meal visited a gastro pub with darkly painted walls and plenty of atmosphere.

IMG_1679

After taking in all the culture I found myself needing some retail therapy and whiled away a good hour or so just browsing around the shops (of which there are plenty) and market before sitting in the beautiful gardens for a spot of lunch and sadly saying goodbye to beautiful Winchester before having to make our way home and back to reality for work in the morning.

It was lovely meeting you, hope to be back again one day……….

Grand Designs Live & Tandem Rides!

This week with a couple of days off following the bank holiday myself and hubby have been out and about.  Firstly we visited Grand Designs Live at Excel Centre in London.  If you are a fan of the TV programme like myself, and with a soft spot for Kevin McCloud, it is an opportunity to get a taste of the show in the flesh so to speak.  We tend to go every year, just as a day out as I commented before that in my dreams I would love to undertake my own Grand Design but the reality is that unless we win the Lottery it is not looking likely any time soon – so this is the next best thing.  The exhibition is on twice a year – end April/May at Excel in London and in October  at Birmingham’s NEC.

GD1

For the last couple of years we have treated ourselves to VIP Tickets and think that this does really cost in – you get a free guide, Grand Designs magazine, a zoned out resting place where you can also leave coats and any purchases you make during the day.  There are also lots of nibblies to keep you happy and also a glass of bubbly to be enjoyed.  I have found that this is enough to keep me energized throughout the day without having to splash out on extra coffees and sweet treats.

gd4

The exhibition is zoned into 6 different areas: these are Grand Build where there is a self build centre, Grand Gardens where there are some show gardens, Grand Kitchens & Bathrooms which has live kitchen demonstrations and the VIP Lounge to the outer edge, Grand Interiors where there are some designed room sets and live theatre talks, Grand Technology and Grand Village which contains the RIBA house of the year model village, Kevin McCloud’s Green Village and the Grand Theatre which has a timetable of talks throughout each day.  There is also a Design Arcade where you are able to purchase artworks, rugs and various smaller items.  There are various cafe’s dotted throughout the space so no need to go hungry at all.

I think that the overall idea of the show is to go along and gather information, talk to experts, get a feel of new ideas and materials on offer, rather than a show to visit with a view to buying lots of  accessories for the home (although as above there are some stalls available) – although of course you can place orders at the stalls if you are in the market for a fantastic new bathroom or living green roofing for your new extension.

I like to try and catch some talks whilst I am there and this year we managed to catch a couple of good ones.  Firstly a talk from a popular design consultancy Two Lovely Gays whom I had read about previously in one of my magazines Two Lovely Gays website.  I found their talk very informative, they spoke about how your experience of life should be enhanced by the space that you live in – that you should listen to the space you are in and three key words when thinking about the design of an interior space are function, colour, material.  More so than ever before people live in FOMO – Fear of Missing Out – it is good to keep up appearances but you need to see how things work for you and try not to follow trends just for the sake of it.  They spoke about 3 kinds of shopper – the micro shopper – who buys an array of items just because they love them and then as an afterthought try to work out where they are going to place the item – the message here is try for a cohesive scheme – secondly the inspiration hoarder – the Pinterest junkie – try to identify what you like about the image but don’t let it control you.  Lastly the collector  – the message here is enjoy what you love and show it off to bring your personality into the space.

gd3

The 2nd talk we went to was with the lovely Charlie Luxton – who I admit I have a bit of a TV crush on – he presents such programmes as Building the Dream, Dream Homes by the Sea and his latest series Dream Homes by the Med.  The idea of this talk was that he took some design plans for a new build house for a lady and her daughter who were on stage with him and he went through them to try and help them improve the design.  There was a cameraman behind him so the plans were blown up onto the big screen.  By the end of the session he had changed virtually everything about the plans and it was really interesting to watch an expert at work.  All in all a very nice day out!

The following day we awoke to beautiful weather, which has been a rarity of late, so to set the day off right we went for a refreshing swim followed by breakfast in the garden and then got our tandem ready for its first outing of the year!  We have had our tandem for a couple of years now and it has been a revelation to me as I am one of the few people to not ride a bike – (it is a balance thing!) – but sitting on the back of the tandem is a breeze – quite literally – although I confess it is hard work as hubby is a good cyclist and doesn’t hang around speed wise – although the tandem has a heavy frame – it is a Dawes Touring aluminium frame – and the weight of the 2 of us does not make for racing speeds!  We set out for a local garden centre.  It was good to be out on the road again, luckily it wasn’t too busy being a Wednesday mid-morning and we soon got into the swing of the push and pull of the pedals.  I love the feeling of freedom, with the breeze gently blowing on your face and the scenery soon changed to open fields.  Once we had arrived and parked up the bike we had a browse around the gorgeous products and plants and then for my favourite part – their cafe with their amazing scones – literally the best I have ever tasted! and a welcome cup of tea.

Then it was back on the bike with a different route home through smaller country lanes with some lovely scenery.

It was a great feeling to be out and about again.  We are planning to do many more rides throughout the summer and with an event booked in August for cycling around the Norfolk Broads, we will need to get some training in for that!

Day Out at Rolling Stones Exhibition

Today I am taking a diversion from interiors to tell you about my day out in London yesterday at the Rolling Stones exhibition at the Saatchi gallery.  I felt this was an exhibition that I had to get tickets for, as I was disappointed when I missed out on the David Bowie exhibition a few years ago.

The Saatchi gallery I think is a beautiful building in a lovely setting near Sloane Square and is Grade II listed and was originally built in 1801 as the Military Asylum for children of soldiers of the regular army.  Around 2005 the plan was for it to be turned into offices, but the Saatchi gallery was on the lookout for new premises and after 2/3 years of redesign to make the interior suitable for gallery use, the Saatchi gallery re-opened in October 2008. I love the mellowness of the yellow bricks, the strong columns and portico to the front.  Internally as a contrast, all is white and minimal – a perfect backdrop for showing off all the art to full effect.

saatchi

exhibitionismI can’t pretend that this is an in-depth look at the exhibition by any means, but merely just an overview and my opinion.  As the exhibition started only a couple of weeks ago there were long queues to get in as it was a Saturday after all, but once we entered we were propelled into the world according to the Rolling Stones.  The exhibition is broken up into 9 zones – immediately you become immersed in a multi-screen visual and auditory feast – the first zone gives you a taste of how their popularity rose by way of records and albums sold through the decades to how they began gigging across the UK in the early days before gathering pace to sold out world-wide tours.

The next zone gives an insight into how the band members lived together in the early years with an actual mock-up of the flat they all shared – with ripped wallpaper and curtains – they were more concerned with perfecting their craft rather than washing the dishes.

rolling stones 3

The exhibition follows through to memorabilia from their early days of touring – concert posters, tickets and photographs.  From here you follow through to view numerous guitars and a mock recording studio – all the time with snippets of music in the background and voice recordings.  Upstairs the rooms contain art and design work for their album covers, song lyrics, videos and films made, stage sets, fashion and costume, collaborations and finally in the back stage area we were all given 3-D glasses as we went through to watch the finale with an interactive performance.

I find I do not want to describe in too much detail as I do not want to give too much away for anyone wishing to go but suffice to say I thought this was a fantastic exhibition – although costing more than the average exhibition I have been to, I feel the price was justified as it was on a much bigger scale and with the large multi-screens it took the experience to a different level.  It concentrates on the band itself and their rise to fame; how they crafted their songs and live shows, rather than the lives of the individuals and the sensational media headlines.  It was well thought out, comprehensive, all the important aspects of the group’s history had been shown.  I think I just love absorbing popular culture from the 1960s onwards – as I was born in the sixties, but as a child growing up was really unaware at that time of the cultural shift that was taking place.

Over the decades the Rolling Stones have given us all some of the greatest songs and it has got me thinking about my favourites.  I find it impossible to choose just one but my top 5 goes like this: ‘You can’t always get what you want’, ‘Gimme shelter’, ‘wild horses’, ‘fool to cry’ and ‘miss you’.   Unfortunately I have never seen them in concert but after watching their Glastonbury 2013 performance on TV it is definitely on my ‘to do’ list!

Finally, if like me you are  a huge music fan I would recommend this exhibition – the sights and sounds evoke so many memories of a group that is embedded into our popular culture

Welcome to my blog!

I have been planning writing this blog in my mind for so long I can’t believe I am actually here!  My name is Annette and  I am passionate about visual imagery and interiors; particularly how our living spaces can make us feel; the psychology that our surrounding spaces have on us – whether they make us feel energised or conversely relaxed and calm. Maybe if we have a lot of outstanding DIY to undertake our homes can make us feel stressed and despondent.

So I have decided to start a blog all about this subject, fuelled on by my recent graduation and diploma from the on-line course with the interior design institute.  I am now looking forward to pulling together cohesive schemes for my interiors. My areas of particular interest are organising schemes that give flow and harmony to rooms whether that be from the colours used – through to fabrics, furnishings and accessories. I have just commenced the interior design institute’s advanced module in home styling which will further enhance my understanding of how to pull schemes together which is particularly useful for when you may wish to sell your home.

Along with my love of interiors the other main passion in my life is exercise and fitness.  I believe that exercise is as good for a person’s mental wellbeing as for their physical state.   I honestly can’t remember ever coming back from a training session wishing that I had stayed under the covers or settled down on the sofa.  As soon as the blood starts pumping and the adrenaline kicks in I just get a buzz.  I indulge in the gym, aerobics, body balance (mix of yoga, pilates and tai chi), swimming and running and I am the first to admit that I am not the fastest or most supple, but I enjoy what I do and I think that is what counts – when the music on my ipod gets me through a mega session on the cross-trainer and in my mind I am in the middle of a club with disco balls shining!  So I will have a category for fitness; what I am up to and any events going on.

IMG_1208

As you can see from above music plays a big part in my life.  From around the age of 10 I have listened to the radio and don’t feel right if I don’t have a soundtrack playing in the background.  Of course there were some great songs and artists when we were growing up in the 60s, 70s and 80s but on this blog I would like mainly to concentrate on some of the great current artists shining through which I think are worth sharing.

Another of my categories for the blog will be everything fashion and style – I do love to shop!  Although like most of us I do have to reign it in  but there is no harm in dreaming about that £600 Mulberry handbag!

IMG_1215

Along the way I am sure I have had many fashion disasters, but like to think that now, at shall we say a more mature age, I have managed to find ‘my style’, although it has to be said I am still partial to a touch of leopard print!

I shall also be documenting holidays and days out and about.  I enjoy nothing better than a day out in London going to visit an exhibition or gallery, just soaking up the history and culture.  I recently visited the V&A Museum to see Shoes – Pleasure and Pain – which was an invaluable insight into shoes throughout the ages.  I am also a member of the National Trust and get a real sense of nostalgia when looking around their historical buildings as well as a sense of paying my part for the upkeep of our outstanding British heritage.

So here we are, a quick overview of the essence of my blog.  I hope you will enjoy reading it and pick up a few tips along the way!  I am hoping to blog on a weekly basis, maybe more if I have been particularly busy!  So until next time…………….
